Samhain 2005
Samhain Ritual. WWU 2005 for Pagans and Students Together.
Supplies Needed:
Chalk, Pomegranite Apples in a Cauldron
Pennies (two per participant) Face paint, masks or costumes for Ritualists
Markers (one per participant) Rope to bind each participant
Decorations for Henge (carved pumpkins, candles)
Incense, anointing oil, candles Polaroid camera and film for all participants (opt.)
A laundry basket (for discarded items)
In Preparation:
Anoint, center and clothe the Ritualists. The act of participating in this kind of ritual must be done with intent. The group must work together.

Draw the Labyrinth upon the ground with the chalk. Remember they follow the space between the lines. It should go all the way around the square, so that the fountain is in the center.

Have the Queen, Greeter, Psychopomp, Eulogy Reader and Light in their places.

Make sure everyone knows what they are doing. (Very important)

You may want to to prepare the party place before hand as well. It’s an important part of the ritual. This is where you ground back to the real world, eat, and share your experiences. Needs to be some place on campus.

Ritual:
Participants begin in Red Square, at the mouth of the Labyrinth. GREETER is there to explain the beginning part of the ritual. She makes sure everyone has two pennies and a marker. (If you choose to take picture of each participant for use in the later part of the ritual, do so now.)

GREETER:
Welcome one and all to PAST’s Samhain ritual. A happy Halloween to you all! This ritual is not about ghosts and goblins. This isn’t a haunted house: it is not intended to scare you, rather, it is a serious ritual in which we shed these mortal bodies and follow in the footsteps of Orpheus, Hercules, Innana, Lugh, and the Great Horned God. For tonight, when the veil between the worlds is thinnest, we travel to the realm of Persephone, Queen of the Underworld. What would you ask Her? What would you wish to know, if you could ask Her anything? I warn you now, it is a long journey, fraught with perils and demons. It is not for the faint hearted. If you do not wish to see this ritual to its end, you must leave now. (pause)
I commend you for taking this journey. You are allowed few things on this journey. Take these coins, a symbol of this realm. And take this marker, which a the tool of change and creation, for that which we write and draw we bring into life. To reach the Underworld you must pass many obstacles, go with care, and do as you are told.
Step up to the Labyrinth door. This is the journey of life. You are to keep your head down and stay upon the path. Follow it to its completion—do not seek short cuts, for there are none in this journey. In the labyrinth, as in life, you will feel as though you’re going about in circles. And when we think we are close to our goals, we often find the path does not go that way. Walk with care. Don’t forget to pay the boat man. Hail and Farewell!

Participants do the Labyrinth, which leads to the fountain in the center. In order to continue, they must pay the ferryman (Psychopomp) to cross them over the water. When they pay, he anoints them with oil.

PSYCHOPOMP
I’ve been waiting for you. The Queen will be expecting you. I trust you’ve had a pleasant journey? Good. Then gimme all your money. That’s right. All of it. I don’t work for free, you know. You won’t need it where you’re going, anyway. These two little pennies are what you worked so hard for in your life. Thanks, I’ll take those. Keep your marker, I don’t want that. We’re going to the Land of the Dead. Got a long way to go. (etc)

When they’ve all crossed, PSYCHOPOMP goes with them as a group. They must line up in line and look down. After all, they are dead. Keep it solemn. Take up a candle. Go to the hall between Miller Market and Miller Hall, where the Ravens are. Stop when everyone is within it.

PSYCHOPOMP
Below your feet are the Ravens. Many believe it is they who take your soul from the land of the living to the land of the dead. They are the threshold, the point of no return. Here you must give up the last comforts of your mortal life. Remove your shoes and socks. Give me your coat, your hat. Trust me. You don’t need these anymore. Finally, you must give me your watches. We pass into the realm where time stands still. There is no hurry or rush. No cell phones, give me the contents of your pocket. You no longer need them. Remove the things of your former life. Discard your old self. Just leave it there. We move on.

The participants follow PSYCHOPOMP into the next place, the inner courtyard where the tree grows. While the participants are busy, GREETER takes up their discarded things to the Henge and hides them from view. She may also wish to warn the EULOGY READER and the QUEEN, so they can prepare themselves. GREETER may also double as LIGHT, with a costume change.

PSYCHOPOMP
This tree is your life, its fruits have fallen, its bounty in decay. Take up the dry leaves from the ground. With your marker, write one thing about yourself on each leaf. Write your name, gender, job, dreams, your place in society, what you stand for, write the aspects of your self that you like, descriptions of your looks. This is what is left of who you are. You hold in your hands what you’ve created in your lifetime. This is what you’ve made of yourself.

Allow them a few minutes to wander around the area, pick up leaves and write on them. They must hold on to the leaves. When they are ready, move them through the building to the road in the back. Follow the road until you get to where the Gate is. Say these things as you go along. Lead the way but don’t look back.

PSYCHOPOMP
Here we are now between your so-called civilized world and the wild world of the dead. The Land of the Dead is this way. These fallen leaves are the people in our lives, they are the deeds that we’ve done, the consequences of our actions. Since you are dead, you may only take the driest of the leaves, the ones with no life. Pick them up, name them. What have you done with your life? Hold on to them. You may only stray from the line to pick up one of these leaves. Keep up. Death waits for no one. If you are left behind, you are lost to us all. Keep up. Keep up. Are you ready to meet the Queen? Keep up!
Say as a Death Dirge, repeat until you are at the Gate.

COME away, come away, death,
And in sad cypres let me be laid;
Fly away, fly away, breath;
I am slain by a fair cruel maid.
My shroud of white, stuck all with yew,
O prepare it!
My part of death, no one so true
Did share it.

Not a flower, not a flower sweet,
On my black coffin let there be strown;
Not a friend, not a friend greet
My poor corse, where my bones shall be thrown:
A thousand thousand sighs to save,
Lay me, O, where
Sad true lover never find my grave
To weep there!

(William Shakespeare)

When they all reach the Gate, the EULOGY READER is there with enough cords for everybody. One at a time, he takes all of the participants’ leaves, except their name, and says for them a eulogy while PSYCHOPOMP binds their hand (in front of them for ease of walking) and take their markers. He says something like:

EULOGY READER
Here is where you leave behind your community. You leave behind your friends and family and pass alone through this portal. Follow the Light and you will know where to go.
Here lies (participants name). …..

Use what is written on their leaves to say something nice about them. Drop the leaves when you are done using them. When finished saying what needs to be said, the EULOGY READER and PSYCHOPOMP say together:

Go home now, to the mother of winter.
Go home now, to your springtime home.
Go home now, to the mother of summer.
Go home now, to your autumn home.
Sleep, oh sleep now. Sleep, oh sleep.
Sleep against her sacred breast.
Sleep, oh sleep now. Sleep, oh sleep.
Sleep this night, let her give you rest.

Being sure they are bound and have their leaf bearing their name, make them pass alone through the portal. Begin again for the next person with their eulogy and the Death song. You will want to take enough time on each person so that the LIGHT can get to the Henge and back.

Once at the Henge, they enter alone. The QUEEN gives them the Draught of Death (salty water) and offers Pomegranate seeds. She ignores anything they might say, being stern and stone-faced until all the participants arrive. They must stand quietly and meditate. She has prepared the apples in a large bowl. The participants discarded articles are arranged on the outer sanctuary once all the participants are inside. The LIGHT, PSYCHOPOMP, GREETER and EULOGY READER are there to help on the outer sanctuary, being careful to be extremely quiet.

QUEEN
You are in Persephone’s realm. You are in the Land of the Dead. Not what you thought, is it? You’ve come on a quest, I understand. You’ve given up your life, your body, your comforts, your identity and deeds…even your community of friends and family. You stand before me cold, hungry and miserable. You can hardly move. But you should have expected that. You are, after all, dead.

PSYCHOPOMP
My Queen, they hold on to life still, for they have kept one thing…

QUEEN
So they have. Let us be rid of it now.

She goes around the circle, taking their names and saying them aloud, she crumples their leaf, declaring they are dead.

QUEEN
Now all is as it should be. What were you looking for when you came here? Surely such a dangerous journey was done with purpose? But now that you have no body, no identity…what would you ask me now? What good does it do for a dead person? (pause)
They tell me it is the Celtic New Year, Samhain, All Hallows Eve…I’m afraid we aren’t so aware of it all down here. I can only imagine that you came because you thought it would be easy. But have you ever been on a journey that was? Perhaps you thought you would come and seek our your ancestors, your dearly departed friends and relatives? Yet, instead, I have killed you. How droll.
But that is the way things work.
You feel cheated, I suppose, being killed when you thought you were on a journey. It’s all quite unfair, isn’t it? Perhaps. I do not care.
However, I will offer you what I have offered to your ancestors—another chance. I am the Queen of Death, but I also grant life anew. I say who goes and who stays.
I offer you the opportunity to return to the Land of the Living. You must take an apple from the cauldron. Only that will release you from the bindings of death, for it is only in life when we are truly free. Eat the whole thing to restore your mortal body, take it into your body as a blessing, each bite being a wish or a promise you will fulfill in this lifetime. Return the core to me in Libation and thank me with the offering.
And since you have chosen to visit me on this night, I cannot keep you from going back. You have sacrificed much to get here. I will allow you to take up again only the vestments that have served you well. You may leave the ones you no longer need here. In death, you become a blank slate, and as a blessing, I will write upon you wisdom. Perhaps you will be able to fill in the rest. Perhaps you won’t. I will leave it in your capable hands.
T’were it not Halloween night, I could have kept you, remember that, so make the best of your After-Death. Live wisely. Live well. Follow the Psychopomp, but trust your own feet. Merry Meet, Merry Part, until we Merry meet again.

Each participant bobs for an apple, when they get one successfully, their bonds are cut. The QUEEN writes ‘I AM’ on their left hand. She hugs or kisses them. They are led to the outer sanctuary where they find their shoes and stuff. Someone should tell them where the after party is. Give them the pictures taken in the beginning. Encourage them to eat the apple.

At the party, welcome every participant back to the world of the living. Encourage them to eat food and drink something warm (they’ll be cold). Share experiences, do divination, play games and eat. It’s party time! Trick or Treating??

Have a few people responsible for clean up. The Ritualists should take a moment together to ground and center. Congratulations on a job well done are in order. Clean up quickly and join the party!

April 2008 Full Moon Ritual
Full Moon in Scorpio Ritual
This is meant to dispel any falsehoods, misconceptions and deceptions within ourselves.

Cast the Circle
This circle is cast as a place where Perfect Love and Perfect Trust reign and all things sacred are present. In the names of the Lord and the Lady this circle is cast. So mote it be!

Calling Corners

I call to the East, element of Air, please aid us in this circle and blow away any misconceptions that may exist within us. So mote it be!

I call to the South, element of Fire, please aid us in this circle and burn away any falsehoods that may exist within us. So mote it be!

I call to the West, element of Water, please aid us in this circle and wash away any deceptions that may exist within us. So mote it be!

I call to the North, element of Earth, please aid us in this circle and bury any lies that may exist within us. So mote it be!

Spirit, God and Goddess

With the four elements, Spirit enters the circle. I also ask for the presence of the God and the Goddess and pray that they will watch over us and lend us their power to deliver us from deception. So mote it be!

So if you haven’t figured it out yet we’re going to be talking about those things which we hide from ourselves. The moon is in Scorpio tonight and it is an excellent time for the Truth and for getting rid of anything that may be deceiving us, including ourselves. We all have things that we don’t necessarily like about ourselves or that we hide from ourselves by saying “Oh I’m not like that.” Or “I don’t do those things” when we know that we ALL do those things. When we do this it creates a veil over our self perception that conceals our true self, not only to others but ourselves. Look at this mirror, see how it is veiled. Maybe you can see a bit of yourself, maybe you can’t at all. Think about what you hide from yourself. Your fears, your inhibitions, those things that you label as faults. Close your eyes and think. When I come to you with the mirror say that which you wish to stop deceiving yourself of into the mirror and see yourself clearly and truly. Shout it if it helps. Know that you are in a safe, sacred and supporting space but if you wish to say it silently or quietly know that the mirror will still absorb it but you still my find yourself a little bit distorted in the reflection. Also know that to name something removes it from darkness and brings it into the light where it cannot be deceitful any longer.

Move around with the mirror uncovered and let everyone shout into it. When everyone is done move to the area in front of the altar where a large rock is on the ground. Throw the mirror onto the rock and let it shatter.

These things are gone! They are shattered and can never be called back! So mote it be!

Now is the time for truth. You have seen yourselves clearly this night, let it be so for all nights henceforth.

Cakes and Ale

May you never hunger and/or thirst.

Say Good Bye!

God, Goddess and Spirit, thank you for attending this circle and aiding us tonight. Go with our blessings in peace. Hail and farewell!

Elements

Thank you to the North, element of Earth, for attending this circle and aiding us tonight. Go with our blessings in peace. Hail and Farewell!

Thank you to the West, element of water, for attending this circle and aiding us tonight. Go with our blessings in peace. Hail and Farewell!

Thank you to the South, element of Fire, for attending this circle and aiding us tonight. Go with our blessings in peace. Hail and Farewell!

Thank you to the East, element of Air, for attending this circle and aiding us tonight. Go with our blessings in peace. Hail and Farewell!

Circle

This circle is open but never broken. Merry meet, merry part and merry meet again. May the Gods preserve the Craft as the Craft preserves the Gods!

Funeral Ritual
So for my death and dying class we had to write our own deaths, obituaries and funerals. I thought I'd post my funeral ritual that I wrote for it. A lot of it is cut and pasted from other stuff. Some of it is my own. This is also being posted in the event I should die while any of you still know me. make sure this is what happens! Also I think I'd probably have the funnest coolest funeral ever.

Xandra’s Funeral/Memorial/Celebration of Life

I’m writing this in the form of a ritual as that is what kind of ceremony I’d like to have happen. I am also writing this not only as an assignment but as a written record of my final wishes. This ritual should take place where my ashes are scattered which needs to be a place where the forest meets the sea so that I will be touched by all four elements: burned by fire, scattered by air and resting on earth and water. This ceremony should focus on rebirth and transition rather than finality of death or the end of life. As of right now I do not have a High Priestess or Priest in mind but I will either eventually name someone or I would like someone who I am close to in the Craft. I would like all family and friends who feel like they would like to attend this ritual be present and they will all stand in the circle. The altar at the center of the circle should hold my ashes and be decorated with whatever my family and friends want to put on it. I would prefer as much purple be worn and displayed on the altar as possible even though its not a traditional mourning color.

Circle Casting

HP and HPS Unison: This circle is cast in the name of the God and the Goddess so that it may only contain perfect Love and perfect Trust. It has no beginning and it has no end just like the circle of creation itself. So mote it be!

Calling the Elements

HPS does East and West. HP does South and North.

East (represented by incense):
"As all that falls shall rise again
So our friend will be reborn
The air we breathe, this treasure of our life, the
Compassionate caring we give each other blesses this Circle."

South (represented by red candle):
"As life is a day
So our friend has passed into the night
The fire of our life, the memories and courage, the
Strength given to us by our friend blesses this Circle."

West (represented by chalice of water):
"As the sun sets
So our friend has left us
The water of our tears like the salt water of the sea, and
Life the water of our mother's womb, blesses this Circle."

North (represented by dish of salt):
"As the Earth forms us
So our friend shall return to the earth
Our Mother feeds us and clothes us. She gives us
Everything and in the end she takes our bodies back.
And Earth blesses this Circle."

Priest (to the HPS): "You are the Goddess, as are all women. You give birth. You feed the children from your own body. And You take them back for a new birth. World without end, eternal creation."

Priestess (to the HP): "And you are the God, as are all men. You are born. You live and You die, only to be born again. All-Father, All-Destroyer, ruler of the land of the dead."

Ceremony

HPS addresses family and friends: At this time Xandra wished that we read this poem by Frank Cordeiro as a message from her to her loved ones:

This is the ritual of my Death.
It is a feast of Joy,
For I will dance among the stars.

Do not grieve my passing,
For we shall meet again,
And dance again, and love again,
For such is the Law and the Promise.

For now, let me take leave
And hold me no longer
For I must be free…

I am the voice of the Beloved.
Find me within the Universe
Remember me with as many names
As there are stars in the sky.

HP: Now is the time for the sharing of stories or memories, pleasant or not. If you would like to come up and speak of Xandra please do so now. She wished that at the end of the each story each person would take a shot of Jack Daniels in remembrance of her and as a reminder that the party is never over, it has only just started.

People come up and tell stories and take shots.

HPS (picks up urn and addresses it): Journey on now, sister. We will follow when we can. May you be born again at the same time and in the same place as those you knew and loved in this life. May you know them again and love them again. Hail and Farewell! (Puts urn back onto altar)

The HPS sings the song “We all come from the Goddess” and then the group joins in for three repetitions of it.

We all come from the Goddess
And to her we shall return
Like a drop of rain
Flowing to the ocean

We all come from the Sun God
And to him we shall return
Like a spark of flame
Rising to the heavens

HPS: We have reached the conclusion of this ceremony but remember that death is not the conclusion of a journey but the beginning of the next one. We will now close the circle.

Dismissing of the Elements

HPS does East and West again and HP does South and North again.

North: Only the Mother is Eternal

West: Love is all we can be sure of

South: Life continues

East: The Sun will rise again

HPS and HP in unison: We thank the elements for their presence here. Hail and Farewell!

Opening of the Circle

HPS and HP in unison: This Circle is open but never broken. May the Gods preserve the Craft as the Craft preserves the Gods!

At this time the ashes would be spread while the Doors song “The End” is playing and everyone would go to a predetermined location, either a bar or a house, and proceed to have a very fun party with plenty of liquor, beer, music, dancing and food.

Invite in participants on 4th floor. Don’t go in ritual staircase.

The coveners are cut in to sacred space. Anoint them on the way in. Stand in the circle around 2 people. Call to the elements

I welcome West, the spirit of Water to this rite. Give us true vision this magickal nite.
Maiden: Once again we meet to turn the wheel. It is the festival of Samhain, the eighth and final spoke of the wheel. On this night, we perceive that the boundaries between the worlds are thin, less defined. The souls of either realm might look beyond the veil and glimpse the other side and perhaps pass through. Our Lord Sun has become the Lord of Shadows. The days grow shorter, the nights cooler. Divination is at its peak. The Cosmos tonight provides a mirror of your soul. Reflecting the cycles of your life that you create. On this night of darkness, look to the mystery of the season to release that which has been completed. Look at and acknowledge that which has come to an ending within your own life and bid it a final farewell, even though this may bring you pain, it must be done.
Let us call to the Crone who rules us all this time of year. I call the eternal Goddess, Mother, who brings forth and nurtures life, who is also Crone - she who cuts the cord, she of wisdom and mystery. Be with us now, my Mother, my Love, my Lady. Thy Priestesses await you. Fill them now, and through them touch the Goddess within us all. Blesses Be.
Invoke the crone:
Hecate, Cerridwen
Dark Mother take us in
Hecate, Cerridwen
Let us be reborn
Chant until HPS puts the veil over her face and becomes the Crone.
Crone: Children of the circle. I am she who cuts the cord of life; I am the wisdom and mystery. I come to your calling and hear you. And I feel a heaviness here. You have loved ones that have passed before this year began, but the pain of their passing is with you still. In time must we release the spirits of our loved ones, though we keep our memories of them. It is their time to move on as others have. Now is a time to share some memories of ancestors, friends, pets and other loved ones who have gone in years past. As we remember these, remember that the newly dead tread the path that has been followed by other beloved souls and will, someday, be followed by each one of us in our time. Now is the time to place your memory upon the altar. Who would like to share a memory?
Allow any who would to share a memory of one past, allow them to place any items on the altar. Take a moment of silence.
Crone: Know that your voices are heard. On this night, the Ancestors in the Summerland can visit and know you. As we teeter on Winter, the very edge of Death, so they teeter on Life, awaiting renewal in the Spring. Through that very door, I await my son, who will be reborn at Yule, the longest night of the year. I can feel him moving inside of me, the gift of my lover from Beltaine. He’ll be a hero and a king, the mightiest of men. You may think I’m too old to have this child, but lo, this is the mystery! For I become young again, a blushing maiden with the return of the sun, my son, the son hero of all peoples, in all worlds. He represents new lives within us all, and the come of the new year. What wish would you ask for the new year? What could my son bring for you?

Coveners go around the circle and state their wishes for the new year. As they do so, the crone starts to feel stomach ache, and writhe, like there is something seriously wrong. This occurs all throughout the sharing. At the end of the sharing wishes, it is very clear that the goddess is weak, and fighting to continue. The maiden notices.

Maiden: what is it my lady?

Crone: This isn’t supposed to happen. Something is wrong. There’s something wrong with the child… this isn’t supposed to happen! This never happens. This cannot happen, the sun needs to return,… or else….

Maiden: is there nothing we can do? Goddess? Lady? How can I help you? What can I do?

Crone: There is something wrong. Its in my womb. Blood…. Pain… (panting) You must go to him.

Maiden: wait… down there? (points to the stairs)

Crone: Yes, find him. It’s the only way. There is something wrong with him.

Maiden: I cannot make this journey alone, lady. I cannot travel to him on my own. I need help.

Crone: (turning to the coveners) The solution lies in the underworld. My lover sacrificed himself so that all may live, his tomb is my womb, in which he is reborn as the sun. Through him we are all reborn. It is a perilous journey, you will face dangers as you travel. If you do not do this, I do not know if the sun will return. Everything that you wished for your future lies at the bottom of that tomb.
Will you undertake this journey?

Coveners: I will!

Crone: You will be challenged many times on the way down. In truth, I don’t know if you’ll find what you need down there. But at any time, you can return to the world of the living, as is your right.
I will give you measures of safety. (the Crone tries to rise, but cannot)

Maiden: Lady! Lie still!

Crone: (hands the priestess the drop spindle) You must do this. You must lead these people as the sacred hierophant, my priestess. Take care of these people, their lives and souls are in your hands.

Maiden: (completely shook up, but steadfast) This spindle is the life of the world, and it contains the thread of life. Everything you know, everyone you see, is a product of the Goddess’s creation in the spinning of the thread. We are all connected to the fabric of life, and once severed, our yarn is discarded, we die and make our own way to the underworld. Grab hold of this thread. DO NOT LET GO. You travel to the underworld on a quest, not as one who has had their life cut short. (Pass the string off the drop spindle to each covener) Hold fast to this string. It is you. This is your life in your hands.

Crone: These are the ways of the underworld. It has many other secrets and rules. As living creatures, you do not share the same rights as those who cross over: there are some things that you cannot do. You will be bound: you cannot fight for your protection. You are born into this world helpless, and so you will enter the next the same way. Maiden, bind their hands.

Maiden: Yes, lady. (binds some hands).

Crone: I must now separate you from the living. Close your eyes to make the transition easier. In order to complete the task, you must obey the Dark Lord, the ruler of that realm. He may ask something of you, something precious. Are you willing to give the Dark Lord whatever he asks?
Coven: Yes!
Crone: Do you trust that you will return from the Darkness?
Coven: Yes!
Crone: Then tread with care. If any of you fear too much for this journey, let them speak now, and remain here with me. (wait for it….) Close your eyes. I will cut your cord, severing you from this life. Hold fast to it! Do not lose your thread! Stay together and wait for your group. Carefully follow the instructions of the hierophant. Remember, there is no time in the Realm of Shadows.
CRONE cuts the cord with scissors and says the following, slicing the throat with the scissors:
Stillness of Mind, Stillness of Breath
Stillness of Body, Semblance of Death!
Coveners are made to wait a few moments while all have finished, feeling cut off from all else.

Maiden leads each covener to the staircase, and wait for the other coveners here. They can open their eyes when all are assembled.
Maiden: We’ve entered the realm of shadows, make sure to stay silent. The way here is a labyrinth, with some doors leading nowhere, so we must tread with care. There are some beings who reside here who would just as fast harm you as they would help. Let me speak to them. Stay silent, unless spoken to directly. Remember why we are doing this, and what is at stake if we fail. Hold on to your lives, your strings. Watch your step, and follow me.

Leads them down the stairs to the first major landing.

Maiden: I’m not sure where to continue, let’s ask here. Knocks on the door loud and hard.

Earth: Cracks open the door, peeking out through the fabric. He is heavy, weighed down with suffering. He’s trying to bargain his way out of dealing with his pain. I hear the knocking. It’s so loud, it’s deafening. Can you not leave me alone in my sorrow? Can’t you feel the pain of it all? It hurts! It’s so heavy. I cannot shoulder this burden. The weight of the earth is on me. What I would give to be rid of this agony (etc.).

Maiden: You poor soul! I hear your agony. What can we do? Is there anything we can do?

Earth: A boon, some trade. Maybe if I have enough riches, enough wealth. If things were but stable…if my future were secure. If only, if only—

Maiden: I cannot help you. I have none of these things.

Earth: What do you have? Any trifle will help. I just need something to alleviate the pain, if but for a moment.

Maiden: I lead these people on a journey, and all they have is their life in their hands. We need to get to the Horned One. There is something wrong. If we do not help, the sun won’t be reborn, the wheel will not turn, and the earth will stagnate and die.

Earth: Your life! That would do, that would do! Just a tiny snip, a taste of someone else’s life. What do you need of it? You have already experienced a portion of, you’ll have more than enough to finish the journey.

Maiden: I cannot give you what is not mine. These lives belong to these people.

Earth: Then ask them. I cannot tell you the way until the pain is relieved. I cannot live through the pain. Just a snip? Give me a bit and I’ll give you what you need. You must give in order to get. I know how to save him.

Maiden: to the Coveners, Would you volunteer your life to help this creature? The task is so important. I will donate some of mine, and those who wish to follow must do the same.

Maiden holds forth her string. Earth reaches a creepy hand through and cuts off the tip with scissors. He does it for all who offer themselves. In exchange, Earth offers #1 part of chant.

Earth: These are the secret words. Reads his part aloud There are three more parts. Combined they will save us all and keep us from suffering.

Maiden: takes the paper pieces. I will keep these safe. Those who have not offered cannot continue, and clinging to life must return to the surface. This creature will show you the way through his realm to the land of the living. The rest of you come with me. Let us continue on our journey.

M leads them down the stairs to the next landing. Knocks on the next door.

Air: totally in denial. This is not happening. This can’t happen. It’s not the way of things. Maybe we all did something wrong. Something horribly wrong. This isn’t happening. There’s nothing wrong, right? I just can’t believe it’s going to end this way. (etc)

Maiden: You poor soul! I hear your angst. What can we do? Is there anything we can do?

Air: A boon, some trade. No. There’s nothing wrong. Everything is fine. The world is not falling apart. The Sun will return as planned, as he always does, as he always will.

Maiden: But we know there is something wrong. How can you deny this? We cannot help him unless you help us.

Air: What can you give me that will help?

Maiden: I lead these people on a journey, and all they have is their life in their hands. We need to get to the Horned One. There is something wrong. If we do not help, the sun won’t be reborn, the wheel will not turn, and the earth will stagnate and die. You know this is true.

Air: A life for a life. It might work if anything were wrong to begin with. Which it’s not!

Maiden: I cannot give you what is not mine. These lives belong to these people.

Air: Then ask them.

Air reaches a creepy hand through and cuts off the tip with scissors. He does it for all who offer themselves. In exchange, Air offers #2 part of chant.

Air: These are the secret words. Reads his part aloud There are two more parts. Combined they will save us all and keep us from suffering

M leads them down the stairs to the next landing. Knocks on the next door.

Fire: Furiously angry, cussing and swearing like he’s got turrets. Fucking shit! Gods be damned! Can’t things just work the way their supposed to? If someone else were in charge. .. but damn it! This is ridiculous! The sun MUST come back or I’m gonna rip some fucking heads off, not to mention we’re all going to disappear in the stinking, disgusting stagnation. Things must change! It must change for the cycle to continue. Fuck!

Maiden: You poor soul! I hear your anger. What can we do? Is there anything we can do?

Fire: I don’t know what will help, maybe a boon, some trade. Whatever it is give it quickly. Give it now!

Maiden: You don’t even know what you want. Calm down, breath a moment.

Fire: What can you give me that will help?

Maiden: I lead these people on a journey, and all they have is their life in their hands. We need to get to the Horned One. There is something wrong. If we do not help, the sun won’t be reborn, the wheel will not turn, and the earth will stagnate and die. We need to get down to him.

Fire: A life for a life, then. Do it.

Maiden: I cannot give you what is not mine. These lives belong to these people, and they are fast going away. We need these lives to get down there and finish our quest.

Fire: Then you can’t fucking to by, now can you? Ask them. Just a snip? Give me a bit and I’ll give you what you need. You must give in order to get. I know how to save him.

Maiden: to the Coveners, Would you volunteer your life to help this creature? The task is so important. I will donate some of mine, though there is not much left, and those who wish to follow must do the same.

Maiden holds forth her string. FIRE reaches a creepy hand through and cuts off the tip with scissors. He does it for all who offer themselves. In exchange, Fire offers #3 part of chant.

Fire: These are the secret words. Reads his part aloud. There is one more part. Combined they will save us all and keep us from suffering

M leads them down the stairs to the next landing. Knocks on the next door.

Water: Sobbing and wailing uncontrollably.

Maiden: You poor soul! I hear your anguish. What can we do? Is there anything we can do?

Water: cries some more, even harder than before

Maiden: I lead these people on a journey, and all they have is their life in their hands. We need to get to the Horned One. There is something wrong. If we do not help, the sun won’t be reborn, the wheel will not turn, and the earth will stagnate and die. We need to get down to him. Snap out of it! We need your help!

Water: boo hoo

Maiden: tries to soothe with a calm voice. I cannot give you what is not mine. These lives belong to these people, and they are fast going away. We need these lives to get down there and finish our quest.

Water: whines. I don’t think it will help…

Maiden: We must try! to the Coveners, Would you volunteer your life to help this creature? The task is so important. I will donate some of mine, though there is not much left, and those who wish to follow must do the same.

Maiden holds forth her string. Water reaches a creepy hand through and cuts off the tip with scissors. He does it for all who offer themselves. In exchange, Water offers #4 part of chant.

Water: These are the secret words. Reads his part aloud. This is the last piece.

They reach the bottom of the stairs. The Horned One is crouched in the corner, he’s covered in blood and his antlers lie at his feet. He’s rocking back and forth, completely lost in his own misery, a silent combination of all the stages of grief.

M: We found him! Finally! He doesn’t look so good…. Oh gods! What has happened to him? He’s not responding. Can’t he hear us? Let us call to him. These words, this chant. Chant it. He may hear us with this chant. Call to him.

The maiden starts the chant of chantiness.

Herne Who Hears
Herne Who Hears All Living Things - Hear Our Call To You! 1
Herne Whose Name All Nature Sings - Hear Our Call To You! 2
Moon Stag, Horned One, Green Man, God; 3
Draw Near, Come Here, Be Here, Now! 4

The De-Horned God struggles from his apathy, and cuts off the chant at its peak. He speaks, but with his hands covering his face:
HG: What is it. Why do you disturb me?

M: We came here for you, oh horned one, the goddess…

Horned God: I’m not the horned god. My horns, these horns…. I’ve sacrificed them. I gave them up. I had to. My body feeds the earth, my sacrifice keeps the world moving. I can’t any longer. This burden,… this sacrifice. I make it every year…

M: Are you sorry that you’ve done this? Is this not something you chose to do?

HG: I did. I love this world, and I die every year to see it survive, but I’m tired, and I need to rest. Leave me. I need to rest. I need to be on my own. Solitude is my sacrifice. I do this by myself. Go away.

M: Listen. We’ve come here to help you. We need you, your lady needs you. You can’t stay here forever. Let us help you. You can’t keep doing this on your own. Let us help. Here. Take my string. Take it. I’ll stay here to help you. I’ll sacrifice my life so that others can continue to live.

HG: Would you give up your life so easily? The life that I give myself for every year? You would give up such a precious thing! And lo! I see all of you have done the same! It is not your place to make this sacrifice. But you have come here and made this sacrifice because your desires will not come fulfilled if I do not return. And what if I didn’t! Would you have asked those things of the Goddess if it were to be your last year? If, as me, you teetered on the edge of death, would these have been the things you had wished you’d accomplished? Or are they trifles? Insignificant details in the scheme of things. My sacrifice is not worth this. I will not come back for those who desecrate the goddess, who is your mother and mine. Why should I bring life back to those who will not live it and do not appriciate it? No. I won’t do it. Not this time.

M: But what can we offer you? What do we have beyond our feeble lives?

HG: You forget your place, little one. I am the Lord of Shadows, the Dark One, and He Who Hears Oathes. Down here, your word is your bond, not the flimsy rope of the world of the living! This is my mystery. Last years shackles still bind you. But I can remove them if you give me something in return. What would you sacrifice? What would you give up to be a better person, a better Pagan? What offering would you make to make my death meaningful?
Goes to each covener in turn (start with Maiden) asks “what would you sacrifice?” Whrn they give a satisfactory answer, release their bonds. Maiden might want to hold a light behind him so he can see what he’s doing. Once released, HG puts a bloody hand to their face and says “So Mote It Be”

HG: I am pleased with your sacrifice and offerings. In turn, I will make my offering. I will come back. But my time here is not done, and I have neglected my work. You must wait in darkness for a little longer, but know that I have promised to return, and I will bring my full bounty and blessings to those who keep their word.

M: We’ve come so far. Won’t you come back with us now?

HG: I understand your meaning, but it is not the way of things. Everything in their proper time. You need this darkness. Spend the time until Winter Solstice to look within and past. The time of looking ahead will come soon enough. But I forget myself. You’ve still got your threads?

M: We do, though they are greatly diminished.

HG: I hope you will agree that it was foolish to waste so much on your lives on depression, anger, denial and avoidance. But are free now, free from bondage and able to make choices. Would you choose to give up what is left of this life so that you might leave clean and start afresh?

M and Coveners: Yes.

HG: Then give me the last of your string. He does so and gives them the wool off his back. Take this. It is that which is spun into thread, it is the very source of life, though it must still be worked. Take it with you to the land of the living, and on your way, face that which you gave up your life for and demand cleansing and safe passage. Go now in joy, for the wheel is turning, and though in death begins anew.

M leads them up the stairs again. This time Water, Fire, Aire and Earth (still masked and creepy, but no longer negative because they’ve had their share of the participants sacrifice) are all waiting outside their respective doors. They cleanse the participants with their elements and say “Be purified”. When all are done say “Blessed Be”.

At the door to the world they are welcomed by the Goddess with open arms, hugs and smiles. When they settle back into the circle, she continues.

Crone: Welcome back everyone. You have done some hard work this evening. I could feel your fears and feel you overcome them. All is right now. The wheel has turned and things will continue as they always have, thanks to your sacrifice. If ever you have need of anything, remember the chant you learned in the other world and he will hear you. The Lord of Shadows has given you the very means to make your own thread of life. When you have a chance tonight, spin it, weave it, decorate it. Keep it safe on you, for here is the mystery: your life is always in your hands to make with it what you will. This is a fresh start. In light of the promises and work you have done this night, what would you create for yourself? Create with care. But now, I too must go and return to the earth. Know that I am in your hearts and below your feet, for those who walk the ways of the Wise know they walk on the breast of the mother.

Devokes. Thank the elements. Undo the circle. Celebrate with lots of food, divination and games. Don’t speak of the underworld.

Here's the one I did in July:Collapse )

Yay I found it finally!! This first Rit is my Lammas Rit and there are some weird spots where I kind of write notes to myself but if you have questions ask!

LAMMAS

Cleansing the Space: I sweep from this place all evil, harm and bad intention. Let it be a sacred place fit for hosting the circle that contains the perfect love and perfect trust of the Lord and Lady.

Casting the circle: May this corn meal, made from the sacred harvest of this season, form the sacred circle which will act as the barrier between the world of man and the world of Other. May it contain only love, trust and joy on this day of celebration and protect us from anything else that may be contrary.

East Quarter: I call to the East, the Element of Air. Your winds inspire our thoughts and goals. We ask for your breezy, cleansing presence at this circle. Join us in celebration of the bounty of the harvest and our lives. So mote it be!

South Quarter: I call to the South, the Element of Fire. Your passion and drive is what has given us the ability to achieve. We ask for your fiery, transformative presence at this circle. Join us in celebration of the bounty of the harvest and our lives. So mote it be!

West Quarter: I call to the West, the Element of Water. Your sweet waters have given life to the grains and fruit of the season as well as ourselves. We ask your flowing, ever-changing presence at this circle. Join us in celebration of the bounty of the harvest and our lives. So mote it be!

North Quarter: I call to the North, the Element of Earth. Your cool fertile soil has provided nutrition for the harvest while giving us stability. We ask your sturdy, comforting presence at this circle. Join us in celebration of the bounty of the harvest and our lives. So mote it be!

We also ask for Spirit and the Lord and Lady of the harvest to join our celebration as well. (light candles)

The Wheel of the Year turns on and on, bringing us from the beginning of one season to the end of another. We gather on this lovely afternoon so that we might celebrate this season of Lughnasadh or Lammas. This is the first harvest. At this time we come to praise the bountiful Goddess and the benevolent God. We wish to give thanks for the bounty of the fertile earth and the blessings we have in our lives. So often in our lives and in this little group of ours we set goals. Rarely do we stop to take the time to congratulate ourselves for that which we have accomplished. Now I’d like everyone to take a minute and reflect on all the accomplishments and goals that have been made and achieved this year. If you feel like sharing or patting yourself on the back please do so.

Everybody shares and we go around the circle.

At this time we will give an offering in thanks to the God and Goddess of bounty and blessing. We give this bounty of the land back to whom it came. We offer it to mother earth and to her consort and we ask that it be shared with the faeries of the fields and the animals of the woodland. I ask you all now to focus your energy on consecrating this offering.

Cornbread and wine are put onto the ground

We will now have cakes and ale. Pass around cornbread and whatever ale/wine/juice. We used blackberry wine. And say May you never hunger and may you never thirst.

Does anyone have anything they want to do or say? Ok we’ll now close the circle.

Thank you Spirit, my Lord and my Lady for joining us today and filling our circle with their love.

North Quarter: Thank you North, Element of Earth, for lending your stability to this rite. Go if you will, stay if you must. Hail and Fairwell!

West Quarter: Thank you West, Element of Water, for lending your fluidity to this rite. Go if you will, stay if you must. Hail and Fairwell!

South Quarter: Thank you South, Element of Fire, for lending your passion to this rite. Go if you will, Stay if you must. Hail and Fairwell!

East Quarter: Thank you East, Element of Air, for lending your inspiration to this rite. Go if you will, stay if you must hail and fairwell!

Release the Circle: I release this circle and give this cornmeal back to the earth and introduce us back into the world of man out of the world of Other. I also return this place back into a mundane space yet still special as part of our mother earth and hope that the perfect love and perfect trust brought here will stay with each of us as individuals.

This circle is open but never broken. Merry meet, merry part and merry meet again. May the gods preserve the craft as the craft preserves the gods!

and I thought I had a few others I had written but apparently not on this computer. Oh well! Hope people get something from it!

Blessed Be,
Xandra

What's Your Sign?

How to piss off every sun sign in the zodiac
(I stole this)

Aries - Smile and nod vacantly. Never express an opinion, preference or idea. When they ask you questions about yourself, DO NOT give a substantial answer. Your interests? "Oh…you know…stuff." Your music "Oh…you know…everything." Throw yourself at them, agree with everything they say, immediately forfeit all arguments. Be a doormat, and thank them for allowing you to be one.

Taurus - Argue with them over the dumbest possible things and refuse, at all costs, to back down. Insult their taste in everything, particularly the things of which they are most proud. Steal their money and spend all of it on gaudy, plastic "bling." Insist you can't tell the difference, and you look hot. Tell them that loyalty is "SO 20th century" and no one believes in that sh*t anymore.

Gemini - Fiercely demand punctuality and consistency of thought. Get angry when they bring up new ideas (make frequent use of the phrase "We weren't talking about that!"). Be closed-minded to the extreme (bonus points if you couple this with emotional neediness). If this fails, gather the most interesting people you know for a night of stimulating conversation…and duct tape their mouth shut.

Cancer - Tease and/or yell at them for being oversensitive until they cry - then tease them for crying. On the off chance that they trust you enough to open up about a problem, respond with "That's pathetic. MAN UP, NANCY!" Maliciously insult their mother and loved ones. Explain that you don't believe in "families." Nurturing is for the weak.

Leo - Leo who? Oh, I'm sorry…I didn't notice you.

Virgo - Show up late. Neglect personal hygiene until you're pretty much a walking biohazard…then try to be affectionate. Really affectionate. Go onto their computer when they're not looking and rearrange all of their files, deleting and adding some at random. Swear it wasn't you, and fail to understand why they even care.

Libra - Pick fights at night, and make sure you go to bed angry. Strive to create as much tension as possible in social situations (bonus points if you can involve them in it directly). Have unbelievably bipolar behavioral tendencies. Once they've found the balance and adjusted to dealing with you…change completely. Lavish gifts and comforts on everyone but them.

Scorpio - Be entirely one dimensional and make it clear that analysis of any kind bores you to death. Only pathetic, tortured weenies look for meaning. Introspection is "dumb." Insist that you know EXACTLY how they feel at all times while giving the most simplistic, surface judgment possible. Extra tip: when they're in a foul mood, console them with the most irritating clichés you can dredge up ("When life gives you lemons…").

Sagittarius - Be clingy, needy, accusatory and miserable. Never, ever laugh. Be perpetually offended by someone or something, particularly if it's harmless. Lock yourself in your room because the world has absolutely nothing interesting to offer. If they ask you to do something enjoyable, reply with "What's the point? We're all just gonna die anyway."

Capricorn - Create a lewd, obnoxious scene in front of their family, boss and co-workers (bonus points if it is somehow emotional in nature, MORE points if you get them fired). Make sure he or she actually loses the respect of others for hanging out with you. And whatever you do…don't make sense. Ever. Demonstrate a complete disregard for the logical laws of cause and effect ("Yeah, I was really thirsty - so I mowed the lawn").

Aquarius - Immediately discuss your emotional needs and biological clock. Ask them to marry you on a first date. When they refuse, flag down the waiter and (sobbing unabashedly) complain about how jealous you are that your insensitive Aquarian cares about everything in the world but you. You don't talk about ideas or concepts…you talk about feelings.

Pisces - Habitually dropkick small animals. Despise art, spirituality and symbolism, in all forms. Swear that creativity is poisoning an otherwise smoothly functioning society. Deny the existence of the soul (bonus points if you somehow tie this into the nonexistence of true love). When they express something deep, reply "people who speak in metaphors should shampoo my crotch."

Ritual Outlines
Here's something that I found on the internet, http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/lofts/2938/RitOut.html
I found it useful.  It seemed to have WAY too much information, so when I write my rituals, I use from the outline what I think is useful, and save the rest for a different rit.

Spirit Guide Ritual by Web Tsar MacKenzie

This ritual involved a three foot in diameter willow hoop made from twisty willow and wire. This was the doorway to the spirit world. The "one last" circle was a braclet made from red, green, and rainbow yarn. Mainly the ritual was an attempt to remind people to do magic in their daily lives. Mama Cass played the part of the spirit guide. The ritual in general used native american pseudo mythology.

Ritual begins

Join hands

Toes on willow circle

Step back until arms are extended.

We create with sacred space with trust and love.

Trust in ourselves

Trust in each other

and trust in the Great Mother

Let nothing but love enter or leave our circle. So mote it be

Try to imagine the elements as I call to them

To the East

Spirit of Smoke guard our circle

To the south

Spirit of the Cook fire guard our circle

To the West

Spirit of the River guard our circle

To the North

Spirit of Cedar guard our circle

Great Mother and Wise Father be with us.

Intro

Full moons

I want us to be introduced to our magical selves. To do this we must travel to the spirit world.

This is our doorway, but we will each need a guide to find our magical selves.

Early people and spirits

Who are the spirits?

Sanctifies life

No boundaries when you visualize your spirit guide. Pick something you already hold sacred.

Visualize

Wait…

Before you enter take a pinch of eyebright in your left hand to help you see your spirit guide.

I will hold the door open and you enter as you wish, but as you enter say:

Through this doorway I now walk

To meet my magical mystical self

And have a talk

P.S. If you meet a fellow traveler on the other side greet her with love.

Take a moment to orient

You see your spirit guide approaching through a mist.

It is Magnificent.

A perfect archetype of its worldly self

It is glowing with a golden divine energy

Wait..

Your guide speaks in just the voice you imagined for it. Strong and full of power.

“You have come to meet you magical self, but

I cannot guide you.

You see you are your magical self already.”

Looking at yourself you realize your guide is right. You glow with the same golden energy as it does.

“Just as I am the divine spirit of your totem,

you are the divine spirit of your flesh and blood self,

capable of great works of magic.”

“But as I am your guide,

I will take you one step further.

You have created a sacred circle?

And within that circle you have entered a circle to emerge here?

One circle, two circles, and why not one more circle?”

“A circle to take with you,

One to protect you whenever you work magic

Inside and outside the sacred space

Drawn from the energy of the spirits around you

Wear this charm to remind you of it.

As you return to your world I charge you

Within a week’s time perform one work of magic

Or this tokens power will leave you.

After wear it until it falls off.

Its spirit will remain with you always after.

Farwell.”
